The day had gone by slowly for Shawn, every second seeming to drag on for hours. He had expected as much, however, considering it had been the first day at his new school. Despite his protests, Shawn's aunt had forced him into being enrolled, and so the young werewolf had been stuck dealing with the unfamiliar territory that surrounded him before he wanted to. Shawn didn't blame her though, she thought he needed friends. It wasn't as if she knew what 'friends' might do to him.
He had tuned out the outside world throughout the school day, ignoring any who spoke to him and racing from class to class without stopping for anything. Sure, Shawn might have made a few people angry, or annoyed, but that was a fair price in his mind. The fewer people he spoke to, the fewer lies he'd have to make.
That was the main reason he tried to avoid everyone and everything. Sure, he could tell a lie if it suited him, but Shawn made friends easily, and he would not, could not, lie to his friends' face. And what happened if he made friends with someone, and his affliction got in the way? Tell his friend, 'Oh, sorry, I'm a werewolf. Can this wait?' No, he didn't think so. That wouldn't fly.
The only friends he could afford to make were either immortals or knew of immortals, something which was apparently in short supply. Other than the scents of Drake, Nix, and Twilight, he had caught the scent of a vampire off a girl in one of his classes, but he was pretty sure she wasn't a bloodsucker. Of course, he didn't give her a good look... the look of hatred had stopped him from paying too close attention to her. In anycase, to Shawn, it seemed as if the immortal count here in Hush Hills was at a rather low number.
However, this posed a problem for the kid. With at least two of the four immortals Shawn had seen or scented well older than himself, it didn't leave him with much room for attempting to make friends. Which, of course, was what the avoidance had been all about.
-----
As soon as school had ended, Shawn had taken upon himself to escape from the crowds of people as quickly as possible. He had gone the opposite way that the majority of students went, towards the town's park. At first, he didn't even plan on actually going there, but Shawn realized that it would be the best idea for several reasons: One, his aunt was at home, most likely asleep. Which meant the front door was locked, and since Shawn had no key, going home would be useless. Two, the park was by default a meeting place, which meant that any trails left by immortals would likely have at least a faded presence there. Third.... well, if it was a park, it meant cute girls to stare at. At 16, the last reason easily made it the best choice.
So it was that Shawn ended up in Hush Hill's park, taking in his surroundings as quickly and with as much accuracy as possible. After awhile of wandering around the park aimlessly, Shawn eventually decided that he would be best served to stop and make himself comfortable on the grass. It would allow him to stretch out, watch a section of the park without interruption, and most importantly, he wouldn't recieve weird looks due to his constant roaming.
He picked a place under a nice shady tree, far away from a similar tree that bore the still strong scents of both Drake and the other vampire. It wasn't so much that the smell bothered him, it was just that he didn't want to be sitting in the scent for too long. In anycase, the ground under this tree was far more comfortable looking, or so Shawn thought.
Sitting down, the werewolf propped himself up on his hands, and simply stared out at the passing humans. No one took notice of him, for to them he was simply a teenage kid blowing off homework in favor of being outside. Whatever they thought, Shawn didn't care. As long as they didn't bother him with something stupid, he would be fine.
As he sat, a cool breeze began to kick up, and Shawn shivered. He threw his scarf around his neck again, and put his hands in his jeans pockets. Under his breath, he cursed Fall. Out of all the seasons, Shawn hated Fall the most. Not because of the leaves, because of school, or because of any of that. No, but because of the chill. Winter was fine, because it tended to be an extreme. But moderate temperatures always threw him off.
It was weird, to say the least. But then again, he was a werewolf... maybe 'weird' was actually his normal.[/color]

At last. School was out for the day. Not that she hadn’t enjoyed the day or anything, but there were better things to do than sit inside listening to teachers go on about whatever subject they had been appointed to teach. Overall though, it had been a good day. She hadn’t really made any new friends, but a few kids seemed at least interested in getting to know her better, though a lot of those offers were shot down, being guys who were more interested in getting to know her body than her personality. However, her two old ones didn’t try to slaughter each other. Which was a very good sign, seeing as one was a vampire, and the other a werewolf. Yes, it had been a good day.
Elizabeth made a beeline for the door as soon as the final bell was out, in an attempt to avoid any offers to hang out. She didn’t quite succeed, because a tall boy with sandy hair managed to catch her before she flew out the door, to ask if she wanted to go to the park to hang out. Elizabeth gave him a apologetic smile. He didn’t know her well enough to see that it was fake, an attempt at courtesy before rejecting his offer for no good reason.
”No… sorry… Have homework and stuff to do. Maybe next time.” Elizabeth said, flashing a ‘charming’, toothy smile, and turning away. The instant she had her back to the boy, her face fell out of the smile like a curtain dropping. Before he could reply, she darted out the door, narrowly squeezing between two bodies. She got out sooner than she expected. Elizabeth always had a gift with moving through crowds. Her small size made it easy to slip between people, and for some reason that she couldn’t imagine, people were always all to happy to move out of the way to make things easier for her. Maybe it was the expression she had on her face while moving through a crowd. It did appear that she would run them over if they didn’t move.
She stepped outside into the cool air, and breathed deeply. The air was tainted with the smell of bus exhaust and slightly sweaty packs of people. But, other than that, the air was delicious. It was dry, crisp, and clear. Actually, a trip to the park sounded good. She could do homework there. Elizabeth headed for the parking lot, looking for her bike. A few kids were standing around it, admiring. A spark of pride flew through her, and a smile appeared. She walked up, shooing some of the kids out of the way, and donned her motorcycle jacket. Her dad had bought it for her one year, it was bright pink. She next slipped the helmet over her head, cutting off a question mid-sentence.
”Sorry, can’t hear you.” Elizabeth shouted over the engine starting up. She revved the engine up to 9000 rpm’s before hopping on and putting it in first gear. She backed out, scattering the crowd, and took off out of the parking lot. This would probably get her even more unwanted attention, but the bike was the only vehicle she had here, and it reminded her of her dad, so she loved to ride it. She headed for the park, watching some of the students heading that way also. A flicker of uncertainty passed through her. If they swarm, I can always leave. Elizabeth told herself, and rolled on the throttle.
Pulling into the parking lot for the park, Elizabeth shut down the bike, and removed her helmet. She sat on the bike for a while, looking around for her favorite tree. She spotted it quickly, and she hopped off, hanging her helmet on a mirror, and taking off her backpack and jacket to drape the jacket over the back of the bike. She grabbed the strap of her backpack, and headed for the tree. As she was looking around, she spotted the guy who invited her here, and returned his wave grudgingly. Ignoring him after that though, she walked up to her tree.
To her surprise, her tree was already occupied. She stopped, staring down at him in surprise, and blinked. He looked slightly familiar. He probably went to her school, and she had probably seen her around. But that wasn’t it. Something in his face, his body reminded her of someone, of something… it reminded her a little bit of Nix. Could he be a werewolf too? Elizabeth wiped that thought from her mind before something of her thoughts showed on her face.
”Um, that’s my tree.” Elizabeth said. She had little hope that he would actually relinquish the tree to her, but she could hope.

Having grown bored of simply sitting there, Shawn had rummaged around his messenger bag, pulling from within it a notebook and a pencil. As he loved art, he figured he'd scetch his surroundings for a little bit. He had been scetching for a little while before he realized that someone was approaching his spot. Shawn glanced up, confused, and saw a girl about his age, someone from the school. In his mind, Shawn flashed through names, but couldn't connect her to one right away, though he was sure he had had a class with her..
When she spoke, Shawn's eyebrow raised. He hadn't been expecting anyone to come up to him, let alone actually speak to him. At her words, Shawn glanced down at the ground, avoiding eye contact. "You're- You're tree? I'm sorry... do you want me to move?" Before his turn, Shawn never would have implyed he would easily be budged, instead giving her some rebuttle or smartass comment. But ever since the turn, he had been a hell of a lot more docile, not wanting to spark any anger, lest it activate any unwanted transformations.
Glancing down at his half-finished sketch, Shawn started to close the notebook and shove it back in his bag. "I - I guess I can move somewhere else if you want this spot..."

Just before the boy but his notepad away, Elizabeth managed to get a glimpse of what he was doing with it. Apparently the kid liked to draw. That was interesting. She took a few more moments to observe him without feeling rude before he looked up at her. Dark hair, dark eyes. He didn’t look anything like Nix, but for some reason he reminded her of him. Why? Elizabeth’s brow furrowed in thought as she stood over him.
When he did glance her way, it wasn’t very long. He lowered his eyes, and Elizabeth blinked in surprise. What he said next made her eyebrows raise, also in surprise. Well that was unexpected, Elizabeth thought. She was sure he would make some smart-aleck remark and go on with what he was doing. Not roll over like a submissive dog. Okay, maybe he is just being polite… Or maybe he had no self confidence. She wondered, looking at him curiously.
Something about him was still nagging her. Forgetting that he had spoken to her, Elizabeth continued staring at him. Though it was hard to get a good look at someone when their face was turned away from you. Suddenly, she crouched down beside him, almost touching him, still looking intently. She cocked her head to the side slightly, her eyes as piercing as the honey-brown depths could get. This was probably rude, but Elizabeth didn’t care right now that she was invading his space and staring.
”Do I know you from somewhere?” Elizabeth asked, her eyes looking over his face for any feature that struck her as familiar.

Just as Shawn was about to move, the girl dropped to a crouch right beside him. This startled him, and Shawn turned to her to see what exactly she was doing. She was simply crouched down, staring at him intently. Shawn raised his eyebrows again, but didn't say anything. He figured she'd realize she was making him feel awkward, or say something.
When the girl finally did speak, the question was so simple it almost made Shawn laugh. He expected something more personal, or a comment of some sort, what with the way she was staring at him. The sides of his mouth twitched upwards, then quickly fell down again.
"Umm, well I'm pretty sure we have, a class together. Other than that, no." The closest thing to a smartass comment he could muster up. It was pathetic, but what the hell.
((Ugh, it looks so much longer before you post it. Grar sorry.))

She watched his expression carefully, noting the raised eyebrows when she crouched down. His face twitched, like he was going to smile right before he started speaking. But he didn’t. Why? Elizabeth turned her mind elsewhere. She couldn’t read into every little thing he did. Well she could but it would waste a lot of time. The corner of her mouth tugged upward slightly, her mouth stretching into a small, lopsided and sarcastic grin. She leaned back, giving him space and rolling her eyes.
”That’s not exactly what I mean.” Elizabeth said. She leaned back, plopping backward on her rump, and crossing her legs. After a little consideration, she scooted backwards a bit more away from him. She looked off into the distance, pondering what to say next. How does one ask ‘Are you a werewolf’? As she was looking around, her eyes found some kids hanging out. The boy she had run into earlier was there, and she and this boy she was sitting with were attracting attention. Elizabeth grimaced, and looked away before they got the idea to come over and see what was going on. She turned back to the kid, a suspicious look on her face.
”You’re new here aren’t you? I’m Elizabeth by the way.” She said, wiping the suspicion off her face and replacing it with a smile. She looked around pointedly suddenly.
”Why you here by yourself? Got no friends?” Elizabeth asked, cocking her head to the side in a birdlike way.

Looking away, Shawn noticied that both himself and the girl were attracting a small bit of attention from others who had came after him. He sighed, so much for avoiding everyone. Oh well, he was sure he could deal for just a little while, long enough to escape to elsewhere.
Shawn glanced back at the girl, and found her staring off into the distance, just as he himself was. She seemed to be pondering something, perhaps why she was still sitting next to this anonymous kid, instead of doing her own thing. Or maybe she was thinking of what to say to him, to start a conversation. Shawn almost snickered. Conversation, right.
As she sat, the girl scooted gradually away, giving Shawn some space. He would have thanked her, had she been looking at him, but as she was still looking away, he didn't. Besides, it wasn't as if it was a huge gesture. It came as a surprise when she turned back and actually introduced herself. "Er, I'm Shawn. Yeah, I just moved here." Damnit, it was hard to distance yourself from someone when you had to actually talk to them. Oh well, he could deal.
"No, not really. I.. I've got nothing better to do." As he talked, he started feeling a tad bit more comfortable, which surprised him. "Its alot better than any other options.." Which it most certainily was. The other possible places for Shawn to have gone either were boring, annoying, or he simply hated. That, and farther away from the school than he had wanted to walk.

Of course he was new here. Nix hadn’t mentioned any other werewolves living in the town. Jeeze. Jumping to conclusions much? You don’t even know for sure what werewolves look like… Yeah but… something about him… I don’t know. I guess we’ll see. Elizabeth’s eyes went out of focus as she argued with herself. She did that often, argued with herself in her mind. If Shawn was paying attention, he would probably wonder if she had a mental disorder. Maybe she did. I mean, who would hang around people who had a thirst for your blood? Elizabeth would. Oh well, better for him to think she was crazy than attractive.
”Yeah me too. Only been here a few weeks.” Elizabeth said. She chuckled at what Shawn said about having no friends. Suddenly she gave him a curious look when he said it was better than other options.
”I can think of a lot of other, better things you could be doing right now…” Elizabeth said, trailing off, her eyes intent again.
”Like homework!” Elizabeth said, the small, crooked smile back. She chuckled, turning so that she was leaning against the tree, making sure she didn’t touch him. Actually… Elizabeth thought. She had heard something about werewolves having a higher body temperature than most humans. She turned to him, and poked his neck briefly before turning to her bag and opening it, reaching inside, and taking out the binder that held her homework.

As he sat there, Shawn eyed Elizabeth with curiosity. She seemed abit... strange. She totally invaded his space, and seemed to space out or fight mental wars in her head. Weird, but, again, he was a werewolf. Weird wasn't exactly weird to him. Generally.
Only a few weeks. At least you seem to get along well here, he thought. In any case, compared to him, she had been a long term resident. She probebly had plenty of friends. Or at least more then Shawn would have in the same space of time.
He was about to reach into his bag and pull out his notebook when she said he could be doing homework. Right. Homework was one of those things that Shawn put off to the last second... and got A's on. Without much of a social life, Shawn generally spent his time absorbing information, which made schoolwork easy to finish. It was just something he was good at doing.
So, Shawn shrugged at what she said, and pulled out his notebook and pen. He had barely turned to his incomplete sketch when he felt a poke on the side of his neck. He froze, and started blinking, and turned slowly to Elizabeth.
"Erm... why did you just poke me?"

Elizabeth started reviewing her homework assignments just as he slowly turned toward her. She froze also, looking pointedly away from him. He then asked her why she poked him. She furrowed her brows. Well you see, I’m too shy to actually ask if you are a werewolf, so I poked you to see if you felt warmer than normal. You did but that’s hardly fool-proof evidence. That’s what Elizabeth though about saying. Suddenly she relaxed, looking over at him, and shrugged.
”No reason.” She said simply, and turned back to her homework. Whipping out a pen from her backpack, Elizabeth started on one of her assignments. It was the history class she took with Nix. It was pretty easy, and she was grateful to the teacher for that. It was annoying having teachers give hard assignments the first week. Not that Elizabeth couldn’t handle it, but there were a lot of other things she would rather be doing. Suddenly an idea came to her.
”Hey, do you know a boy named Phoenix?” Elizabeth asked, looking at him again.

Right. No reason.
For some, weird reason, Shawn very much doubted this. Either this girl was one of those extremely creepy, mental types, or she was curious about something. What she could possibly be curious about baffeled him. There was nothing strange about him, besides the werewolf thing, that anyone would notice on a glance. Except for his awkward behavior at school, but that hardly was anything to be curious about. Right?
Elizabeth started working on a homework assignment, history by the looks of things. Shrugging, Shawn turned back to his art, but barely began when Elizabeth spoke again. He turned back to her, eyebrows raised. Random question as it seemed, the look in Elizabeth's eyes seemed to hint at an obvious purpose behind it. In anycase, Shawn answered.
"Yes. I know someone named Phoenix. We've only talked a couple of times, but we have alot in common, strangely enough." Wasn't that the truth. Considering both were werewolves, Shawn and 'Nix shared alot in common. As did Shawn and Twilight... and Shawn and every other bloody werewolf in the world.
It did seem slightly odd though that she would ask about a werewolf, while talking to another werewolf, without knowing that Shawn was one. Perhaps she knew about Nix, though that was something he doubted. From the impression Nix gave Shawn, he wasn't one to go around telling Humans what he was. So that couldn't possibly be it. Must be a simple coincidence, 'tis all.

Elizabeth perked up when she heard he knew of Nix. Her eye brows raised, her eyes widened slightly. It was even more interesting that he said he had a lot in common with him. Yeah, he’s totally a werewolf. Elizabeth thought to herself. Odd though that Nix hadn’t mentioned him to her. She would have to speak to him about this. But for now, Elizabeth would focus on her most recent discovery. Another teenage werewolf boy in Hush Hills. Lovely.
For now, she wiped the surprised expression from her face. Nodding instead in understanding.
”Yeah, that would explain the having no friends thing. That sort of ‘condition’ makes it hard to make friends” She said casually. She then chuckled lightly.
”Then again, I wouldn’t know.” She added. Of course, he would know whether or not she was a werewolf. At least he should. This made her wonder how long he’d been one. Then again she didn’t even know how long Nix had been one. Though this boy didn’t seem to have been one for very long. She didn’t know why, but he just seemed like it. But what did she know? Yes, she knew quite a bit of the vampire world, but werewolves were another thing. Though she would like to know more about them. However, spending time alone with strange werewolves probably wasn’t the best way to go about that.

Freezing again, Shawn stared straight ahead, his grip on his pencil deathly tight. What the hell did she just say? Condition? Oh crap, oh crap, oh crap... He turned to Elizabeth, forcing his face to remain puzzeled, rather than surprised. "What do you mean, condition? That makes no sense..."
It was hard to remain calm under the circumstances. It could be a total coincidence, or Elizabeth could know exactly what he was. If she did know, what would that mean? Would see be afraid of him? Hate him? Or would she actually not mind it, like so few people before? Either way, it was making Shawn nervous.
Very, very nervous.
"What condition would I have? Do I look sick or something?"

Elizabeth caught his sudden stiffening when she said something about his condition. She watched him calmly. As long as he didn’t try to kill or kidnap her now that he suspected she knew. Probably should have told Vara where I was going… Elizabeth thought to herself. But, hindsight’s 20/20. Besides, what would he really do in a crowded park? Elizabeth was now relying on his common sense to keep her alive. Maybe relying on the common sense of a teenage boy wasn’t a good idea either though…
Oh well. He seemed way too nervous to be plotting anything sinister also. Yes, quite nervous. It was always a red flag when people ask you something twice before you can respond. She chuckled lightly, hoping to ease his nerves. She would be one of the last humans in the town to condemn or report him for what he was. Having immortal friends kinda brought her on their side. Thinking of sides made her think of the government man. she wracked her brain for his name, but came up with nothing, only his face. Shaking her head to clear her thoughts, Elizabeth decided she should respond to his questions.
”Yes, well I can’t think of anything else to call it. Well… Besides it’s actual name but… don’t usually say it out loud in public.” Elizabeth said. Say it. Out loud… A mermaid. Elizabeth chuckled at the YouTube spoof on one of the more popular vampire fiction books out. This was a very cliché moment.
”And I can’t really tell just by looking at you… I mean it was part hunch that made me suspicious of you. But anyways…” Elizabeth trailed off, wondering where the conversation would go now. Elizabeth kept her eyes on the boy, watching his reactions, wondering what he’ll say about this.

When Elizabeth laughed slightly, Shawn began to relax a bit. He began to doubt this girl had anything malicious in mind for him, and so decided to just let go of his thin defense. "Well, I guess theres no use trying to deny it, is there? I didn't realize anyone here had... intimate knowledge of the... condition." Which was entirely true... why would he have? Hush Hills was just another American town in the middle of nowhere.
But now that he had said that, Shawn didn't know where to go from there. Here he was, sitting next to a girl he knew nothing about but her name, and she apparently knew the greatest secret he had. To put it simply, Shawn felt extemely vulnerable, and so had no idea what to do.
Racking his mind for something to say, he decieded to ask how it was she knew. "Erm... so, how did you know? About the condition, I mean..
